7 Easy-Peasy Ways to Tame Anxiety Anytime
Bonus:Some Plugs for Relaxation Spots in Colorado Springs!
Anxiety can get the best of most of us at the most unexpected times! These simple exercises can help you keep those jitters in check throughout the day. So, let’s dive into some laid-back anxiety-busting moves.
- The Deep Breathing Break –Feeling the tension rising? It’s time for a deep breathing break. Find a quiet spot, or just close your eyes at your desk, and take a few deep breaths. Inhale through your nose for a count of four, hold for four, and then exhale through your mouth for another four counts. It’s like a mini-vacation for your mind.
- The Desk Stretch – Desk jobs can be a breeding ground for anxiety. Take a break to stretch your limbs. Try some neck rolls, shoulder shrugs, and wrist circles. You’ll feel the tension melting away as you get your blood flowing.
- The Walk-and-Talk – Feeling the pressure of an upcoming deadline or a stressful phone call? Take it outside. A quick walk in the fresh air can do wonders for your mood. If you need to make a phone call, do it while you walk, and you’ll be surprised how much it eases your mind. It’s crazy how much better you can process emotions when moving your body.
- The Grounding Exercise – I love these and try to teach grounding to almost all of my clients. When anxiety is bubbling up, try a grounding exercise. Sit down, close your eyes, and take a moment to name five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. The point of something that seems so simple is to help keep our mind present focused. Our anxiety frequently tends to be linked to worry regarding past or future events and grounding brings us back to where our two feet physically are.
- The Power of Positivity – Does it sound a little cheesy? Maybe but who cares because it works! Counter those negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Keep a list of your favorite uplifting quotes and positive self talk handy. Whenever anxiety strikes, take a moment to recite them to yourself. It can be as simple as “I am strong,” “I’ve got this,” or “This too shall pass.”
- The Tension Release – This one happens to me all the time. When you’re anxious, you might not even realize how tensed up your muscles are. So, try this: Tense up all your muscles as tight as you can for a count of five, and then release. Do this a few times, and you’ll physically feel the stress melting away.
- The Gratitude Journal – I want to be the person who can make the time for this. I hope you can get there too because it’s a powerful exercise. Anxiety often makes us focus on what’s going wrong. Let’s challenge this dooming thought process by starting a gratitude journal. Take a few minutes each day to jot down things you’re thankful for. It shifts your focus to the positive and can help put your worries in perspective.
Remember, these exercises are like pocket-sized anxiety tamers that you can whip out anytime, anywhere. They’re simple, quick, and don’t require any special equipment. So, the next time anxiety comes knocking, give one of these a try. Your calm and composed self will thank you for it!
