Psychosexual Evaluation & Sex Offender Risk Assessment in Colorado Springs, CO

If you are struggling with sexually abusive behavior or are being accused of engaging in this type of behavior, a psychosexual evaluation may be a good step forward for you. A sex offender risk assessment can help determine a plan to move forward as well as help you learn about why you may have acted out sexually and how to avoid repeating those behaviors.

Often, a psychosexual evaluation provides helpful information to your probation officer, legal team, and/or the courts.
These evaluations are completed at the request of a client, attorney, or mandating agency such as probation or the Department of Corrections for a person being charged with or convicted/adjudicated of a sexual offense. Evaluations typically include a comprehensive clinical interview. As well as a variety of assessments to measure risk, personality characteristics, potential mental health issues, substance abuse screening, sexual fantasy screening, sexual addiction screening test, sexual interest, and an empathy scale.

Can Just Anybody Complete A Psychosexual Evaluation?

The answer is NO. Our evaluator, Heidi Schnakenberg, is approved by the Sex Offender Management Board of Colorado to conduct evaluations for those who have committed or are being charged with a sexual offense. As well as those struggling with problem sexual behaviors. Evaluators and treatment providers are regulated in Colorado and must maintain a certain standard of work to comply with the SOMB standards. In addition, there are annual training requirements. This is in order to ensure evaluators and treatment providers are utilizing best practice techniques as well as being aware of the most current research.

Understanding the best way to treat sexually abusive behavior is an ever-changing field and it is critical that practitioners are up to date with the most current literature to provide the best service possible.  An Offense Specific Mental Health Evaluation or sex offender risk assessment can help you and your supports determine the most appropriate next steps. This is done by identifying risk, need, and responsivity. You can use the recommendations to help reduce your risk of reoffending in the future.

How Offense-Specific Mental Health Evaluation Works

A psychosexual or sex offender evaluation consists of the following process. A client usually spends 3-4 hours with the evaluator to complete the clinical interview as well as several of the assessments. In addition to listening, your evaluator will write a detailed report that encompasses your developmental, sexual, and relationship history and other relevant backgrounds. This gives a thorough understanding of how the evaluator reached certain conclusions in the recommendation steps. The process is outlined below:
1. First, the evaluator will provide a safe, accepting space so that you will feel comfortable sharing your history with them through a clinical interview.
2. Next the evaluator will have you participate in a personality inventory as well as questionnaires that help them learn more about you and your preferences.
3. You will also participate in a sexual interest assessment and various other sexual assessments. In order to help us better understand your preferences and needs.
4. Your evaluator will provide a completed offense-specific mental health evaluation to the referral source (typically a lawyer or probation officer) within 2-4 weeks of the clinical interview.
